Do you know which allergens most frequently occur in which seasons?

  • Trees - February to the end of May.
  • Grasses - End of April through June.
  • 2nd Pollination - Late August through the first frost (cross-reacts with spring grasses).
  • Weeds - April through the first frost.
  • Ragweed - mid August through the first frost.
  • Molds - Year round.
  • Animals - Year round (worse in winter).
  • Mites - Breed at the end of summer (most symptomatic when heat is first turned on).

When planning your allergy testing strategy, it may be helpful to know...

Mini screens (10-13 allergens plus a Total IgE) will identify 98% of all IgE mediated sensitivities in atopic patients. These 10-13 allergens, relevant to your region, will provide an indication of which patients are atopic, and should be considered for additional testing.

Did you know...?

Allergies to one member of a family of foods often means allergy to other members. Here are some common food families, which may be applicable to your patients:

Grains (cereal or grass family):

Wheat, corn, rice, oats, barley, rye, wild rice, sugar cane, millet, sorghum, and bamboo shoots. (The hay fever grasses belong to this family.)

Aster:

Lettuce is most common, others are: chickory, endive, escarole, artichoke, dandelion, celtuc, sunflower seeds and tarragon (ragweed belongs to this family, as well as the insecticides and pyrethrum.)

Fungus:

Mmushroom and yeast (the molds that cause inhalant allergy belong to this family as well) cheese of all kinds, including cottage cheese, vinegar and vinegar containing foods, such as mayon- naise and other salad dressings, catsup, chilisauce, pickles, pickled beets, relishes and green olives, mustard, sour cream, sour milk and buttermilk, yogurt, alcoholic liquors, especially beer and wine, soured breads, such as pumpernickel, coffee cakes and other foods made with large amounts of yeast, sauerkraut, cider, pickled and smoked meats and fish, including delicatessen foods, sausages, frankfurters, corned beef and pickled tongue, ham and bacon, all dried fruits, such as apricots, dates, prunes, figs and raisins, canned tomatoes unless homemade, all caned juices, eat only freshly opened canned foods and freshly prepared fresh fruits, do not eat meat or fish more than 24 hours old, avoid foods if made from leftovers, such as meatloaf, hash and croquettes, avoid hamburger unless made from freshly ground meat.

Melon:

Watermelon, cucumber, cantaloupe, pumpkin, squash and other melons.

Potato:

Potato, tomato, eggplant, peppers, all foods called pepper (except for black and white pepper) such as green pepper, red pepper, chili pepper, paprika and cayenne.

Mollusk:

Oyster, clam abalone and mussel.
